Окончил Ленинградский государственный университет в 1982 г. С 1982 г. по 1994 г. работал в Ленинградском государственном институте точной механики и оптики (в настоящее время НИУ ИТМО), на кафедре физики и кафедре теоретической физики.

В 1989 году защитил кандидатскую диссертацию в Ленинградском государственном университете по проблематике, связанной с динамикой солитонов и методом обратной задачи. В 1997 году защитил в университете г. Ювяскюла (Финляндия) докторскую диссертацию (PhD), а в 2002 году там же получил звание профессора. Окончил Хельсинскую Высшую Экономическую Школу (Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration), а также Manchester Business School. Получил степень Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Возобновил работу в НИУ ИТМО в 2006 году. 

Автор ряда международно-признанных научных работ. В настоящее время активно продолжает вести научные исследования в области квантовой оптики и теории солитонов.
